Having spent many hours tasting the wines around the region I recommend the following as the ‘must see’ Cellar Doors for the Barossa. There are many others to taste along the way but I would highly recommend that you put these on your list.

Guests of Barossa Vista will have a little treat of Eperosa waiting for them when they arrive. James Halliday was impressed enough to give this boutique winery 4 ½ stars on debut and 94, 93 and 91 points for their Mataro, GSM and Shiraz respectively. Private tastings can be arranged by appointment with the wine maker, Brett Grocke, via their web site - thoroughly recommended.

I would recommend absolutely everything. Of course if you are lucky enough to arrive the day that the Hill of Grace or Mount Edelstone is released then buy yourself a case – forget the expense. However for a special treat, within a more reasonable budget pick yourself up a bottle of Tappa Pass Shiraz or Keyneton Estate Euphonium – funny names but you will not be sorry.

One of James Halliday’s favourite wineries. Kabminye have made an art form of reviving some of the once traditional varieties of the region and making some spectacular wines such as Schliebs Block and Irma Adeline. Try the White Frontignac when you are there, is one of the best in the region. Stop for lunch at the adjoining Krondorf Road Café.

Famous for their Basket Press but don’t miss the sparkling Shiraz, as my friend Lisa says, "The prettiest Sparkling Shiraz on the planet". I am inclined to agree with her. Well done Rockford! Don’t pass up the Alicante Bouchet, a nice light surprise from the house of the 'Big Red'.

Oh my! Where to start? Probably from the top and make your way down …. if you can handle it! If you are the designated driver and can not taste the lot then try the Saignee, The Steading, Descendant and Run Rig, but only if you absolutely, positively had to be on your best behaviour.

You will learn more in 5 minutes at Two Hands about the different red wine growing regions of Australia (and even the sub regions within the Barossa) than you would at a 6 week wine course. Not to be missed … favourites include any of the Garden series, Gnarly Dudes and Bad Impersonator. Number one must try for me is the Moscato – a lovely fun tipple!
